New Vaping Ordinance in Baton Rouge Protects Louisiana’s Youth

The East Baton Rouge Metro Council has approved its first local ordinance regulating vape and tobacco retailers to build stronger protections against youth vaping beyond the existing state permits and licenses.

The new ordinance authored by Rowdy Gaudet, Denise Amoroso, Carolyn Coleman and Twahna Harris, includes increased retail distance requirements from schools, religious institutions, public libraries, child day care facilities, and public parks. It also requires clear signage that anyone younger than 18 is prohibited from entering vaping retail premises.

Protecting the health of youth through vaping prevention is paramount as 25.5% of Louisiana high school youth currently vape according to the American Lung Association affecting their short- and long-term health and wellness.
