Active Environments Planning
By rebuilding street networks in a way that systematically integrates facilities for non-motorized transportation and effective strategies for minimizing air and water impacts, the City of New Orleans is poised to take a momentous step forward in its recovery. Through a donation from Entergy Corporation, LPHI has partnered with the City of New Orleans to provide the necessary technical expertise to undertake a number of unique projects that are providing momentum to transform a storm-wrecked city into an innovative model for urban reinvention.
Since April 2009, Entergy has funded LPHI’s Urban Planning Specialist/Engineer to provide specialized oversight for City projects including $11M worth of new bicycle lanes, new street trees and sidewalks to be constructed over the next year in the New Orleans area, three funded “Safe Routes to School” projects at area elementary schools, project management for the 3.1 mile Lafitte Greenway and several new projects that will integrate “green” infrastructure such as trees, bioswales and modular marshes along neighborhood streets. LPHI's Urban Planning Specialist/Engineer also assists the City and community partners to secure funding for projects that support increased opportunities for bicycling, walking and environmentally-friendly streetscapes.
Expected outcomes include:
- Continued design and implementation of bicycle and pedestrian facilities
- Improved quality of existing transportation corridors for bicycling and walking
- Integration of carbon reduction strategies and improved storm water management practices into transportation projects
- Increased awareness of nationwide best practices relating to bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and environmentally sound transportation practices
- The creation of bicycle/pedestrian advisory committees at the regional or local level
- Increased community awareness of bicycle and pedestrian issues and publicity for successful bike and pedestrian projects
