July 15th, 2010
LPHI and the Louisiana Community AIDS Partnership have been awarded $1.2 million in grant funding provided by the National AIDS Fund and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMS). Partners in the “Positive Charge” grant initiative include the Louisiana Office of Public Health HIV/AIDS Program (OPH-HAP), Louisiana Office of Public Health STD Control Program (OPH-STD), Louisiana State University Health Care Services Division (LSUHCSD), Earl K. Long Early Intervention Clinic (EKL-EIC), LSU Interim Hospital - HOP Clinic, NO/AIDS Task Force, Avita Drugs, N'R Peace, St. John #5/Camp ACE, Orleans Parish Prison and Capital Area Reentry Program, Inc. (CARP)
Positive Charge is an outreach initiative designed to support programs customized to meet the unique needs of individuals living with HIV, and is dedicated to working with healthcare providers, community members, advocates, caregivers and families of people living with HIV/AIDS in order to assist them in overcoming the barriers that may be preventing them from getting the HIV care, treatment and support they need. The awarding of these grants marks the first milestone in the rollout of BMS’s Positive Charge initiative, which aims to break down barriers to care for people living with HIV/AIDS. In the United States, it is estimated that there are 640,000 people with HIV who are not receiving treatment because of personal, societal and structural barriers. In Louisiana it is estimated that as of 2008, 41% of all persons living with HIV have not accessed HIV-related primary medical care in a 12-month period. The Positive Charge grants were announced at a White House event on May 13, where Joe Kimbrell, CEO of the Louisiana Public Health Institute, appeared as a guest panel member.
