Building School-Based Health Centers in Metro New Orleans
School Health Connection (SHC), a program of the Louisiana Public Health Institute, was able to partner with the Jefferson Parish School System to provide needed services in Jefferson Parish elementary, middle, and high schools. These services include everything from preventative medical care to urgent medical and mental health services.
All of the school-based health centers in Jefferson Parish were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. LPHI is committed to providing access to quality health care to at risk populations and recognized the opportunity to help rebuild school-based health care in Metro New Orleans.
School Health Connection’s goal is to improve the overall health of students and school communities and is continuing to build a network of health centers on school campuses in New Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Jefferson Parishes.
In addition, SHC has received two grant awards from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, one for school-based behavioral health and the other for improving the financial sustainability and quality of school-based clinics by implementing electronic medical record technology.
